How getting started with investing has helped Jack and his family.

"If I had to describe HL in two words, I’d say ‘easy’ and ‘approachable’.

When I first started, I knew nothing about investments. It was something that I felt was for people a lot richer than me. However, I soon realised that anyone can invest."

"I’m Jack. I’m 36. About ten years ago, my job brought me down to Bristol. This is where myself, my wife and two kids have set up our lives – in the wonderful South West!

I’ve never been very good at saving money – it’s not something that comes naturally to me. However, starting a career and becoming an adult, with children, has made me appreciate its importance."

"I have an HL Stocks and Shares ISA. That works perfectly for me. Each year up to £20,000 can be saved effectively tax free, so it’s a good place to start.

I also have HL Junior ISAs for each of my two children. I put a little bit of money into their accounts each month. It’s going to be in there for 18+ years, so has plenty of time to grow. Hopefully they’ll do something sensible with it once they have access!

One great advantage I’ve found on the HL mobile app is having my own investments alongside my family’s. I can link the accounts, which means I’m able to see everything in one place and add money as and when required. It’s very easy.

At HL, I’ve found there’s a massive amount of investment choice. There are a huge range of shares to choose from, as well as funds and ready-made options. It made getting started with investing a lot easier.

Investing for longer increases the likelihood of positive returns. Over a period of five years or more, investments usually give you a higher return compared to cash savings. But investments can go down as well as up in value, so unlike cash, you could get back less than you put in.

Tax rules can change and the tax benefits of ISAs depend on your circumstances. Your child must be a UK resident under age 18 to be eligible for a Junior ISA.

How self-employed clients Holli and Joanna are saving for retirement.

Holli: "My pension was a very big priority when I started my own business. I decided to transfer my old workplace pension to HL purely because I wanted everything in one place. It is very easy now with HL that I manage all my pensions under one roof."

Joanna: "When I went self-employed, one of the things I was really aware of was that I wouldn't automatically receive a pension from my workplace anymore. So it was important to me to think about saving for my later life. I did consider a pension, but I wasn't sure what my options were. So I had a look at the Hargreaves Lansdown website to see what potential things I could use to save for later on.

I would say to other people looking to go self-employed for the first time that they should definitely go for it after they've fully considered what it means for their finances. I think it was really important from the outset for me to think about how to save for my future, how to put away money for my retirement, and also to make sure I had enough money to pay my tax bill each year.

I did consider opening a HL SIPP, but having only recently gone self-employed, I wasn't quite sure what the future holds and I wasn't completely confident about locking my money away long term in that pension.

What I like about the HL LISA is that I can access the money at any age if I need to. I do realise that there would be a government penalty if I did that, but the flexibility puts my mind at ease."

"I was extremely satisfied with the financial advice that I received because the adviser took the time and effort to actually understand my position and understand what my criteria were, what my concerns were.

I definitely gained confidence as a result of the advice I had because it meant that when I went to invest the lump sum that came with my pension, I was able to understand how to split it up across different funds, what sort of numbers I would be expecting to come out of it.

Just a general confidence and comfort gain. The fees charged for the service provided were in fact quite reasonable considering the amount of work that had to be done, both in supporting me through getting the funds out of the previous pension providers and also in the rearranging of the investments that I had.

After getting the advice, I actually felt a lot more relaxed. The outshot of the advice was a rearrangement of how my SIPP was invested, which has been very beneficial. So the investment choices that I had made for me by HL, have proved to be, I think, very wise.

We're able to have a holiday over to the States and travel in a lot more comfort than we would have done otherwise and not had a concern at all about the cost of doing so."
