Jack's story

Jack invests in his own HL Stocks and Shares ISA, alongside HL Junior ISAs for his young children.

"About ten years ago, my job brought me down to Bristol. This is where myself, my wife and two kids have set up our lives – in the wonderful South West!

When I first started, I knew nothing about investments. It was something that I felt was for people a lot richer than me. However, I soon realised that anyone can invest.

I’ve never been very good at saving money – it’s not something that comes naturally to me. However, starting a career and becoming an adult, with children, has made me appreciate its importance.

I have an HL Stocks and Shares ISA. That works perfectly for me. Each year up to £20,000 can be saved effectively tax free, so it’s a good place to start.

I also have HL Junior ISAs for each of my two children. I put a little bit of money into their accounts each month. It’s going to be in there for 18+ years, so has plenty of time to grow. Hopefully they’ll do something sensible with it once they have access!

If I had to describe HL in two words, I’d say ‘easy’ and ‘approachable’.

One great advantage I’ve found on the HL mobile app is having my own investments alongside my family’s. I can link the accounts, which means I’m able to see everything in one place and add money as and when required. It’s very easy.

At HL, I’ve found there’s a massive amount of investment choice. There are a huge range of shares to choose from, as well as funds and ready-made options. It made getting started with investing a lot easier.

The power of investing has given added security to my family. It’s ensured that we have both a rainy-day fund and much longer-term, hopefully an early retirement fund."

Please note: This case study isn’t personal advice. If you’re not sure what’s best for your situation, ask for financial advice. Unlike cash, investments go up and down in value, so you and your child could get back more or less than you put in. Tax benefits depend on individual circumstances and rules change.
