Our view on this Fund

This fund is on the Wealth Shortlist of funds our analysts believe have the potential to outperform their peers over the long term. However, this is not a recommendation to buy.

The fund invests flexibly across the fixed-interest markets, from government bonds to higher-risk high yield bonds. It also invests in some shares, which could boost long-term income and growth. This makes the fund a more adventurous option compared with some other funds that invest solely in bonds.

Artemis is home to a good team of bond investors. David Ennett and Jack Holmes co-manage the fund They're focused on producing a high income for clients and we think they have the experience, support and resources to do a good job for investors. We think this fund has the potential to deliver an attractive return and a high income to investors over the long term.

Our view on the sector

Strategic bond funds have the freedom to invest across the fixed-interest spectrum, from traditional government and corporate bonds to higher-risk high-yield bonds. They can also invest up to 20% of the fund overseas and potentially benefit from currency movements. But this relies on the skill of the fund manager in making the right calls. Given the huge flexibility fund managers in this sector have, each fund should be judged on its own merits. Some focus on generating an income while others try to grow investors' money, or shelter it when times get tougher.

Performance Analysis

To generate a high income for investors, the fund invests in high-yield bonds and also invests in some company shares. Both of these can increase volatility and mean that we don't expect the fund to hold up quite as well as some other funds in the sector when bond markets go through a tough patch but expect it to perform better than peers in the IA £ Strategic Bond sector in a rising market. This makes the fund a more adventurous option compared with some other funds that invest solely in bonds. We think it has the potential to perform well over the long term though, although there are no guarantees.

Investment Philosophy

The manager's investment philosophy is simple. They invest in bonds that offer an attractive yield and keep hold of them until they find more attractive income opportunities elsewhere.

Process and Portfolio Construction

The managers look to identify bonds offering attractive yields and trading at attractive valuations from companies they believe will be able to service their debts and pay bondholders. They focus on finding cash generative companies which possess pricing power. This includes spending time analysing the dynamics of both the industry in which the company operates in and the company itself.

Up to 20% of the fund can be invested in the shares of UK and European companies. Ed Legget contributes to this part of the portfolio by selecting the shares that feature. This part of the fund could boost both growth and income.
