Our view on the sector

The financial sector is commonly associated with banks and the memory of the turmoil they faced during the 2007 / 2008 financial crisis remains fresh in many investors' minds. A lot of progress has been made since the crisis though and Western banks are managed differently and subject to greater regulatory scrutiny. The financial sector is also much broader and more diverse than many realise. Banks in emerging markets were barely affected by the financial crisis while the sector also comprises companies in the insurance, asset management, and payment processing industries globally. This has given fund managers plenty of opportunities to find attractive businesses, but it should still be remembered that funds investing in a single sector are higher-risk than those diversified across a broad range of sectors.
