Our view on this Fund

This fund is on the Wealth Shortlist of funds our analysts believe have the potential to outperform their peers over the long term. However, this is not a recommendation to buy.

Legal & General All Stocks Gilt Index is our favoured gilt tracker fund. Gilts are issued and backed by the UK government, and could be a useful way to diversify a portfolio focused on shares or corporate bonds. We think Legal & General's team is one of the most experienced in managing a gilt tracker and we like the fact this fund is run at low lost.

Our view on the sector

Funds in this sector invest in bonds issued by the British government. They're typically viewed as lower risk because it's unlikely the UK government would default on its debts and be unable to pay the interest due to bondholders. They're still volatile at times though and their prices can go up and down due to wider economic factors, such as changes in interest rates. UK gilt funds probably won't achieve spectacular rates of growth. But they could be a good addition to a more conservative portfolio. They could also be used to diversify a portfolio focused on company shares or corporate bonds.

Performance Analysis

This fund aims to track the performance of the broader market of UK gilts. It's followed the performance of this index closely since launch, helped by having one of the lowest charges in this sector. Costs will always drag on performance to a degree, though.

Investment Philosophy

Tracker funds are one of the simplest ways to invest. They aim to match the performance of an index, rather than beat it. They usually do this by investing in every company in the index. This means they don't need analysts to research individual companies, which keeps costs to a minimum. If the fund's costs are low it's likely to track the index more closely.

Process and Portfolio Construction

This fund invests in every bond in the FTSE Actuaries UK Gilts All Stocks Index and in the same proportion. This is called full replication and could help the fund track the performance of the index closely. Legal & General is a fairly conservative tracker fund manager and they don't lend investments like some others do. They look for other opportunities to reduce costs though, like when they rebalance the fund to match the index, or by reinvesting dividends.
