This fund invests in technology companies from both developed and more advanced, though still higher-risk, emerging markets. An index tracker fund is one of the simplest ways to invest, and this fund could be a low-cost way to gain exposure to the rapidly growing technology sector. As a large part is invested in the US, it could also help diversify an investment portfolio that’s focused on other regions. Funds that invest in specific or specialist sectors carry more risk so a fund like this should only form a small part of a well-diversified investment portfolio.

Our view on the sector

Technology is an exciting sector with many interesting companies and is behind almost everything we do. There have been some big winners in the sector, like Google and Amazon. But there have also been companies that have fallen from grace like Blackberry and Nokia as well as smaller, speculative start-up companies from emerging markets that could blossom or fail altogether. Investing in a single area is higher-risk and a long-term investment approach is essential. Most technology funds invest heavily in the US which remains a global technology hub.

Performance Analysis

The fund's tracked the FTSE World -Technology Index closely since it launched. A big part of this is down to the fund's low charges. As with all tracker funds though, the performance will almost always be slightly behind the index due to the charges.

Investment Philosophy

Tracker funds are one of the simplest ways to invest. They aim to match the performance of an index, rather than beat it. They usually do this by investing in every company in the index. This means they don't need analysts to research individual companies, which keeps costs to a minimum. If the fund's costs are low it's likely to track the index more closely.

Process and Portfolio Construction

The fund invests in every company in the FTSE World Technology Index and in the same proportion. This is known as full replication and helps the fund closely match the performance of the benchmark. Legal & General are always looking for ways to reduce costs and this is an important part of managing index tracker funds. It lends some of the investments in the fund to others in exchange for a fee. This helps to offset some of the costs involved with running the fund but adds risk.
