Our view on this Fund

This fund is on the Wealth Shortlist of funds our analysts believe have the potential to outperform their peers over the long term. However, this is not a recommendation to buy.

The emerging markets include some of the fastest-growing economies in the world: China, India and Malaysia to name a few. This fund offers a simple way to invest broadly in these countries and is our favoured emerging markets tracker fund.

Our view on the sector

The emerging markets are a diverse range of economies stretching from Asia and Eastern Europe to South Africa and Latin America. Some are rich in commodities and natural resources, some rely on exporting goods to Western economies, and others have a vibrant consumer-driven society. They're all at different stages of economic development and while we think they've got great long-term growth prospects, they're more volatile and higher-risk than more developed ones. We think a broad global emerging markets fund could be a good starting point, then there are others that focus on a specific country or region.

Performance Analysis

This fund aims to track the performance of the broader emerging stock market. Since launch it's tracked the index closely. The fund's charges are low, though performance will always be slightly behind the index because of these costs.

Investment Philosophy

Tracker funds are one of the simplest ways to invest. They aim to match the performance of an index, rather than beat it. They usually do this by investing in every company in the index. This means they don't need analysts to research individual companies, which keeps costs to a minimum. If the fund's costs are low, it's likely to track the index more closely.

Process and Portfolio Construction

This fund invests in almost every company in the FTSE Emerging Index. This is known as partial replication, which could help the fund track the index closely without the cost of holding every stock in it. Companies that make up a very small part of the index are sometimes not held in the fund as they can be more difficult or expensive to buy and sell. The fund can also lend some of its investments to others in exchange for a fee. This helps to keep costs lower.

Mr. Doyle's service with the firm dates back to 2004, including his years with Barclays Global Investors (BGI), which merged with BlackRock in 2009. At BGI, he was a portfolio manager in the Institutional Index Equity team. Prior to joining BGI, he was with KPMG. Mr. Doyle earned a master's degree in economics and finance from Bristol University in 2000.
